Biopsy
A biopsy in gynecology is a simple medical procedure where a small tissue sample is taken from a part of the reproductive organs, like the cervix, uterus, or ovaries, to check for any abnormal cells. This sample is then examined under a microscope to identify conditions like infections, abnormal growths, or cancer.
When is it Needed?
Doctors may recommend a gynecological biopsy if they notice unusual symptoms such as:
–Persistent pelvic pain
–Abnormal bleeding (between periods, after sex, or post-menopause)
–Unusual discharge
–Abnormal results from Pap tests or imaging scans
Causes for Concern
A biopsy can help diagnose causes like infections, fibroids, precancerous changes, or cancer. These abnormal cells could be due to infections, hormonal imbalances, or underlying health issues.
Treatment
If the biopsy finds abnormal cells, treatment depends on the cause. It might include medication for infections, removal of polyps or abnormal tissue, or more intensive care if cancer is found. A biopsy is usually quick and minimally uncomfortable, and results provide a clearer direction for treatment if needed.
