Dilation and Curettage D&C
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is a medical procedure where the doctor gently opens the cervix (dilation) and uses a special tool to remove tissue from the lining of the uterus (curettage). This procedure can be done for both diagnostic and treatment purposes.
Why is it Done?
D&C is commonly used to:
–Diagnose the cause of abnormal bleeding
–Clear out tissue after a miscarriage or abortion
–Remove growths, like polyps
–Treat certain conditions that affect the uterine lining
Symptoms That May Lead to D&C
Doctors may recommend a D&C if you experience:
–Heavy or irregular bleeding
–Prolonged bleeding after pregnancy loss
–Unexplained pelvic pain
Treatment and Recovery
D&C is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. Afterward, some cramping and light bleeding is normal for a few days. Recovery is typically quick, and doctors may advise avoiding activities like heavy lifting and using tampons for a few weeks. D&C can help improve symptoms and, in some cases, provide a diagnosis for further treatment.
